A Rich History

Like most things in The South, The Ford Plantation has a history stretching back for generations. It was one of the first land grants issued by General James Edward Oglethorpe, who founded Savannah in 1733. In antebellum times, it was a thriving rice plantation, and later it would go on to become the winter home of famed U.S. industrialist Henry Ford. It was here that Ford retreated from his frenetic professional life in Dearborn, Michigan, and it was a place where he entertained both family and famous friends such as inventor Thomas Edison and naturalist John Burroughs.
